.net - Created to fit the needs of Internet Network services, became a second choice when a .com domain was not available. It is best to obtain a .com domain for businesses and use the new .biz as a second choice.
.org - Intended for non-profit and other types of organizations.
.biz - A great second choice for .com domains, watch for this new top level take off fast.
.info For informational websites.
.us - Relatively new, intended for websites insite the United States. May be useful for businesses, time will tell.
.name - Want to have janesmith.name? It's now possible, but not very useful for businesses. Domain extensions to avoid:.cc - Once marketed as an alternative to .com, Clear Channel Communications signed a deal with the Cocos Islands (the owner and intended users of .cc domains). With the power of owning hundreds of television and radio stations, they tried to market .cc into something popular. It failed, and you rarely hear of .cc domains today..tv, .ws, .nu, .bz - Too expensive and not intended for use in the United States. Stick with the tried and true.
